Our favorite time of the year is finally here! The holiday spirit is about to take over and there are many parties to look forward to. Time to dust off that sparkling dress as Christmas party and New Year’s Eve are approaching. But what about makeup? There is a thin line between adding a bit more glitter to your usual makeup and looking cheap or like you’re trying too hard. Here’re a few tips on how to elevate your festive holiday makeup and create a glamorous head-turning look.
Dramatic eye makeup: to make all eyes on you
While your usual eye makeup probably includes a few coats of mascara and an eyeliner, you can get a bit wild during the holiday season. Take Chrissy Teigen’s holiday makeup advice: turn to festive glittering eyeshadows such as sparkling gold or bronze ones and add a bit of that shimmer to your skin too by using a bronzer.
Our advice is to make your eyes pop by applying black eyeliner right along the root of your lashes: this will make them look thicker and really open up your eyes. If you want to make it even more dramatic, add deep black fake eyelashes. To avoid a doll-like look, you can use partial fake lashes and fill in the volume of your natural ones. You can also try the classic black smokey eye or add a bit of color to it.
Pucker up: bold lipstick for kissable lips
When it comes to choosing the right shade of lipstick, forget about being subtle. Turn to deep shades such as burgundy, blackberry, bold red-brown hues, dark violet, or even nearly-black shades. Matte lipsticks are a craze right now and they can give your look a dash of sophistication. Glossy ones are also sexy and an excellent choice for party lovers.
Make sure you match the shade of your lipstick with your overall outfit and manicure as well. You can’t go wrong with the classic red but do check out other useful makeup tips to make you stand out so that you achieve a balanced and polished look. Make sure you exfoliate your lips to avoid poor colour application.
Shine bright like a diamond: add a bit of glitter
Nothing beats a sparkling look but don’t overdo it: you don’t want to leave a shimmering trace everywhere you go or look like a Christmas tree ornament. You can find gel sequined eyeliners that can add a bit of sparkle to your look: use your steady hand and carefully draw a thin line above your black eyeliner following the outer corner of your eye.
Do the same following the lower lash line. Be creative: use a crimson-colored glitter from your local arts and crafts shop and gently pat it over your red lipstick. As for the skin, try glittering powder for the finish: using a soft makeup brush, swipe it against your bronzed cheekbones. It’s like using glitter
instead of a highlighter in a strobing technique!
Eyebrows on point: brush and enhance
If you do all of your makeup dramatically and leave your eyebrows natural, it might result in an unfinished look. Don’t worry if you’ve happened to over pluck: you can use makeup to fill in the brows and give them more definition.
Eyebrows shape your face so make sure to keep them neat. Sure, Cara Delevingne and Penelope Cruz dictate the full-brow trend but don’t fill your brows too thick if they are naturally thin. For the holiday makeup look, use a spoolie brush to pull the brows up. Then use a pencil to fill them in with upward dash-like strokes. Use an angled brush to finish up and brush them again for a natural look.
With just a little bit of effort, you can look exceptionally good. Go wild a bit, relax and enjoy the night!
